COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS

El objetivo de esta sesión es que identifiquemos cuando un sustantivo es contable (countable) o incontable (uncountable).

Imaginemos que estamos entrando a un taller “workshop” y observamos:

Pintura : paint              auto : car                     gasolina: petrol/gasoline

¿Cómo reconocemos en inglés si un sustantivo es contable o incontable?

Bien comencemos nuestra sesión:

1.- Countable nouns

Aquellos sustantivos que tienen singular y plural, es decir los podemos contar.

For example:

A book, two books, three books …..

2.- Uncountable nouns

Aquellos que no se pueden contar a través de los números cardinales. Solo tienen forma singular. Generalmente son los líquidos, polvos, granos pequeños y materiales que pueden cambiar de forma.

3.-  Expresions

Veamos algunas expresiones que podemos usar con estos sustantivos:

a.     Some – any

Puedes usarlo con sustantivos contables e incontables.

Some: algunos, algunas, algo. Se usa generalmente en oraciones afirmativas  y en preguntas cuando si pones que la respuesta va a ser afirmativa.

Any: ningún, ninguna (oraciones negativas).

Algo, algunos, algunas (preguntas).

Cualquier, cualquiera (oraciones afirmativas).

Examples:

Some dogs can be dangerous.                                 ………………………………..

I don’t use any computers at work.                            ………………………………..

I usually drink some wine with my meal.                     ………………………………..

I don’t usually drink any water with my wine.              …………………………………..

b.-  Many – few

Se usa con sustantivos contables plurales.

Many: Muchos, muchas.

A few: unos cuantos /as.

Examples:

There are few elephants in England.                        ………………………………..

There are many elephants in the zoo                       ………………………………..

c.-  Much – a little

Much: mucho /a

A little: un poco

Solo se usa con sustantivos incontables.

Examples:

 I don’t usually drink much coffee.
We have a little wine.

d.-  A lot of

Mucha /o  y muchos /as.

Solo puedes usarlo con sustantivos plurales contables y con sustantivos incontables.

Examples:

A lot of wine is drunk in France.

A lot of computers were reported broken the week before.

4.- Making uncountable nouns countable

Tú puedes convertir sustantivos incontables en contables usando ciertas expresiones.

Examples:

A piece/ slice : una pieza , rebanada , pedazo.

10 litres : 10 litros.

A can : una lata.

A tube : un tubo.

A cup : una taza.

A bag: una bolsa.
